Quote: “The handcuffing and arresting of five, eight, and nine year-old children by police officers, as is the case, is an unacceptable application of authority. In almost all of these instances, these children were of no dangerous threat to anyone’s welfare. They certainly are not criminals. For there to be sanctioned use of police force for behavior, that was once upon a time contained through adult counseling and care, is unconscionable. These are not isolated incidences; they are on the rise, and there has not been sufficient response from our communities to let it be understood that this kind of abuse is unacceptable. -Harry Belafonte
Vehicles: Cadre Organizations, Cell Organizations, Collective, Cooperative Business, For Profit Business, Network, Non-Profit Organizations, Religious Organizations, Street Organizations, Unions, Working on Something New
Goals: Our organized regional meetings will fortify local relationships nationally. Collectively we find a common national agenda towards justice while continuing to pursue community objectives. Our National Convention will take place on Nov. 17th & 18th in Oakland, CA. Such conventions will allow large groups of people to democratically participate in the goals and objectives of The Gathering. In shifting the policy that incarcerates our communities, we have found that many of our partners have a litany of policy solutions to end the suffering of poor people, people most affected by the justice system. Our web presence will be a technical expression of The Gathering program and will reflect the needs of the community by creating a database of people throughout the country interested in supporting non-violent direct action and trained in non-violent direct action. The current website of The Gathering is www.thegatheringforjustice.org.

The Gathering offers non-violent direct action training with the wisdom drawn from the history of the Civil Rights Movement and its non-violent strategies. Our elders connect young people to the importance of non-violence. Like SNCC, the youth divisions of SCLC, NAACP and CORE as our tactical models, we envision the possibilities of reclaiming our children from the system that takes them from the cradle to the penitentiary.
