Quote:
"If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has and it never will." -Frederick Douglass
The Ruckus Society provides environmental, human rights, and social justice organizers with the tools, training, and support needed to achieve their goals.
We are living in a time of extreme challenges: stopping the war in Iraq, thwarting climate change catastrophes, reclaiming the commons from corporations, conquering our addiction to oil, and protecting human rights. In order to effectively meet these challenges, now, more than ever, environmental and social justice organizers must develop winning strategies that are creative, nonviolent, and take their lead from impacted communities. By building on the traditions of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., we, at The Ruckus Society, provide our partner organizations and activists with the tools, training, and support necessary to tackle these problems and achieve their goals.
Vision:
The Ruckus Society supports communities moving towards a vision of sustainability and self-determination by supporting fearless leaders in realizing abundance, developing realistic visions of change and directly confronting those in power.
We believe this vision will be realized when the interactions of a community with themselves, with each other and with the world in which we live are nonviolent, guarantee long-term survival and growth, and ensure that each person, each family, and each community can determine how they want to live.
