Invite Others to Join this Circle
DC BLOC is a people of color-centered network of youth workers, activists, cultural workers, organizers and movement builders. We meet once a month to build skills and political analysis through trainings, discussions or exchanges.
Who Is The Circle For:
People who fight 4 social justice in the District
People who believe in youth movement
Purpose Or Topic:
The DC chapter of BLOC was founded in 2000, and has been consistently active since June of 2004. We come together to…
> Develop ourselves professionally
> Educate ourselves politically
> Build relationships
> Build skills
> Support each other
> Learn from each other
> Debate, reflect & celebrate
Heroes:
Ella Baker is one of the unsung sheroes of the Civil Rights Movement. Her work reflected the belief that "strong people don't strong leaders." She was one of the first to recognize the power of young people as a force for social change. She played a quiet but pivotal role in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.
Every year on the anniversary of her birth (which is also the anniversary of her death) DC BLOC holds an Ella Baker Bash to celebrate her work and the principles that guided her work. It is also a time for us to reconnect with each other, rejoice at our victories and rejuvenate our commitment to struggle.
